چکیده
–The importance of flow through sudden change in flow passages lies in the numerous industrial applications such as, polymer processing, injection molding, biomedical instruments, extrusion, thermoforming etc. In this work, fluid flow through an axi-symmetric sudden contraction flow passages has been carried out using commercial CFD tools. Flow in the inverse direction, which represents flow through a sudden expansion, has also been simulated for the same conditions. A comparison has been established between the two flows occurring in the opposite direction. A twodimensional computational domain has been chosen for the analysis considering steady, laminar flow and Newtonian fluid. The effects of flow rates are investigated with constant diameter ratios to understand the flow characteristics for sudden expansion and sudden contraction geometry. The size of the recirculation zone, flow reattachment length, redevelopment of flow, recirculating flow strength depends on several parameters, primarily on flow rate i.e. Reynolds number, expansion/contraction ratio and flow direction. Flow tends to become unstable at lower Reynolds number for high expansion ratio. Keywords––Sudden Contraction, Sudden expansion, Recirculation, Flow Separation, Flow Reattachment.

Laminar flow of a viscoelastic shear-thinning liquid through a plane sudden expansion preceded by a gradual contraction
Experimental observations are reported for the laminar flow of a viscoelastic liquid through a symmetrical plane sudden expansion preceded by a gradual contraction from a square duct. As is well known, for Newtonian fluid flow above a critical Reynolds number the flowfield downstream of an expansion becomes asymmetric. For the viscoelastic liquid investigated here the asymmetry is greatly reduc...
متن کاملPhysical Modelling of Self-Aeration in a Cavitating Sudden PIPE Expansion Flow
Sudden pipe expansions have been known as efficient hydraulic energy dissipaters for a long time. The complex phenomenon of flow separation and velocity discontinuity at the interface of incoming jet and the recirculation flow, results in intensive shear and tensile rupture of the fluid and the associated destructive phenomenon of cavitation. This paper focuses on aeration in sudden pipe expans...

In the present study, the nonlinear model of non-Newtonian blood flow in cosine-shape stenosed elastic artery is numerically examined. The model is carried out for axisymmetric, two-dimensional and fully developed blood flow. The vessel wall is assumed to be have time-dependent radius that is important factor for study of blood flow. The cosine-shape stenosis convert to rigid artery by using a ...

متن کاملDean-flow-coupled elasto-inertial three-dimensional particle focusing under viscoelastic flow in a straight channel with asymmetrical expansion-contraction cavity arrays.
In this paper, 3D particle focusing in a straight channel with asymmetrical expansion-contraction cavity arrays (ECCA channel) is achieved by exploiting the dean-flow-coupled elasto-inertial effects. First, the mechanism of particle focusing in both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids was introduced. Then particle focusing was demonstrated experimentally in this channel with Newtonian and non-Ne...
